Artist Statement

With my paintings and drawings, I attempt to reveal fragments of our everyday world that routinely go unnoticed or forgotten.  My ultimate goal is to give the viewer an opportunity to pause and recognize the easily overlooked beauty in our midst. After many years working as a commercial artist, I have also begun to cross over into the domain of fine art; creating original pieces for exhibit and sale.

This transition has not required revising my approach or technique.  In fact the most critical aspect of my art work as an illustrator, namely to communicate a mood or an atmosphere and hint at a story or an idea, is also maintained.  It is my desire to continue to work in both the commercial as well as the fine art fields.

The subject matter for my art often consists of remnants from the past as they appear today.  I am fascinated by the effects of time, years of service and nature itself.  A shiny new truck holds no interest for me, for example, but an worn out relic from generations ago, hidden away at the back of an old barn, rivets my attention and compels me to consider it as a work of art. Ever advancing rust, faded, peeling paint, cracked, split rubber, weathered, worm riddled wood and sun bleached field stone are typically the cornerstones of my paintings.

Historic homes and buildings, vehicles and machinery, along with other curious objects left behind from a previous time, are scattered in and around the landscape, both rural and inner city.  Discovering them does not necessarily require traveling far but instead keeping an ever watchful eye out.

Not everything I base my art on is man made or even aged.  The natural world and its’ inhabitants also routinely appear in my paintings.  My upmost challenge is to capture the mood and atmosphere convincingly.

With many years of accumulated experience behind me, it is no longer accurate to consider myself a ‘new’ artist.  In spite of that, My belief is that as more skill and knowledge are gained, boundless new possibilities to grow as an artist are revealed.
