Artist Statement
‘Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.’
An elegantly simple yet profound statement that encompasses why an artist chooses the subjects that they do.
I believe that as artists, we attempt to capture and share our own personal ‘take’ on beauty. My version of what constitutes ‘beauty’ rests well outside of the accepted norms, and I seek it in unexpected places. When I am able to create, with paint or graphite, the complex shapes, patterns and colours of, say, an old neglected farm truck resting forgotten in a back field, and then present it in a striking composition, it most assuredly becomes a ‘thing of beauty’ to me. If that perception is shared by an audience of my work, then I know the artwork created is successful.
Many have remarked that my work gives them a strong sense of ‘being there’, as if the atmosphere and mood of the scene are experienced or felt, as well as witnessed. I take that as an indication of success, in that I strive to bring the viewer along beside me when studying a scene or object that will eventually become my next piece of art.
A look through the ‘gallery’ section of this web site will reveal, far better than by words, my own sense of ‘beauty’ and the varied places I have uncovered it.
I invite all to share my creations of ‘beauty’ and revisit what constitutes ‘beauty’ in their own mind.
